Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller was a United States Marine Corps officer. Beginning his career fighting guerillas in Haiti and Nicaragua as part of the Banana Wars, he later served with distinction in World War II and the Korean War as a senior officer. By the time of his retirement in 1955, he had reached the rank of lieutenant general.

"Oorah" is a battle cry common in the United States Marine Corps since the mid-20th century. The term became popular in Korea in 1953, when Marines began using "aarugha" as a motivational tool, which eventually molded itself into "oorah". Despite what some Marines might think, "oorah" has nothing to do with the U.S. Army, and it is not the old Ottoman word for "kill".
