This painting is based on a photo I took back in March 1995, on a very snowy trip to the Vale Of Eden, which runs beside the Western escarpment of the Pennines. With the hills behind me I came to the ruins of Pendragon castle, just outside Kirkby Stephen. According to legend Pendragon Castle was built by Uther Pendragon (father of King Arthur), but as far as we know it was built in the 12th Century with later additions. It was made a ruin by an attack in 1541, and rebuilt in 1660, only to fall into disrepair by 1770 to become the ruin we see today. It is accessible to the public for free (or at least it was the last time I visited), and lies within the recently extended Yorkshire Dales National Park in the historic county of Westmorland...
