Chorio, the old capital of Halki (Chalki), with 4,000 inhabitants in its heyday, is now deserted and mostly in ruins. Built around the hill upon which the remains of the Kastro stands (the castle of the Medieval Knights of St John), the town was built in a position concealed from view from the sea, and high above the initial maraudings of pirates. On August 14th, the population ascends to Chorio for the Festival of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, when the beautiful Church of the Virgin Mary (Panagia) is opened, and the church hall is full, with feasting and dancing. The church has a number of beautiful frescoes that make it a major tourist attraction.

Halki is a small yet very charming island, part of the Dodecanese Group of Greek islands, situated opposite the west coast of the Island of Rhodes.
