The Kennet and Avon Canal as it passes through Newbury in Berkshire. This scene, taken from the West Mills swing bridge shows the canal as it heads towards the centre of the town, about to pass through Town Lock. On the right bank is the site of West Mills - Newbury was once a busy agricultural and woollen textile manufacturing centre. The tower of St Nicolas church, restored during the early 1500s stands above the surrounding buildings.

The Kennet and Avon Canal as it makes its way westwards out of Newbury in West Berkshire. Here it joins with the River Kennet which at one time provided the water to power the corn and woollen mills along here. Newbury was renowned for its woollen industry and just ahead here is a row of weavers' cottages from the earlier days of cottage industry. The canal was used to transport wool, woollen goods as well as other commodities east to London via the Thames or west to Bath and Bristol.

A walk along the towpath of the Kennet and Avon Canal in November sunshine. This is the stretch of waterway at Sheffield Bottom near Theale in Berkshire. This image has been finished in the style of a coloured pencil drawing. The canal was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to join the Thames at Reading with Bristol, following the courses of the rivers Kennet and Avon, providing smooth transport of goods to London. The canal's heyday ended with the coming of the Great Western Railway.

The Union Canal as it crosses Avon Aquaduct in Muiravonside Country Park, near Whitecross, Falkirk District, Scotland. The Avon Aquaduct runs through the middle of Muiravonside Country Park. Formerly an estate owned by the Stirling Family of Falkirk, this 170 acre park comprises woodlands, parkland and the River Avon. At 810 feet long, this aquaduct is the second longest in Britain and lifts the canal 86 feet over the River Avon. The spectacular views from the top make the climb worthwhile. Stratford upon Avon

Approaching the bottom gate of Sulhamstead lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal in Berkshire, England. The lock was originally constructed between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of the engineer John Hore from Newbury. The lock has a rise and fall of 1.25 metres (4ft 1inch) The Kennet and Avon was designed to link the rivers Kennet in the east and Avon in the west so that goods could be transported from Bristol to London. It was completely renovated in the late 1900s.

The K&A as it is known stretches for 87 miles between Reading and Bristol and has 105 locks. The canal was built between 1794 and 1810 to link the rivers Kennet and Avon, enabling goods to travel between Bristol and London. It fell into disuse with the coming of the railways but was restored in the late 1900s .
