A black and white image of Great Western Railways Engine 2857 on the Severn Valley Railway at Highley Station in September 2018 celebrating her 100th birthday. Engine 2857 was built in Swindon in 1918 and was in service until 1963. This class of engine (2800) was responsible for hauling most of the long distance heavy freight trains on the GWR / BR western region for almost 60 years!

Great Western Railway pannier tank locomotive 3738. This locomotive, designed by Collett, is one of the 57xx class. It was built at the Great Western Railway works at Swindon in 1937 and saw service at Old Oak Common. After being sold for scrap, it was bought by the Great Western Society and now runs regularly at the Didcot Rail Centre, Oxfordshire.

Great Western Railway locomotive number 6960 'Raveningham Hall' awaits its next task at Minehead station, end of the line on the West Somerset Railway (WSR). This locomotive (one of the Great Western's 'Hall Class' of engines) is named after a country estate and stately home in Norfolk. The 4-6-0 coal-fired Hall class engines were designed by Charles Collett and were used for mixed traffic operations between 1928 and 1965. Of the 259 built, Raveningham Hall is one of just seven preserved locos of its type. It was built in 1944 at the GWR's Swindon works and remained in service until 1964, when it was sold for scrap. Great Western Railway saddle tank 1340 Trojan at the Didcot Rail Centre, Oxfordshire. This locomotive was built by the Avonside Engine Company in 1897, largely seeing service in the South Wales docks. It was finally sold to a Midlands colliery before finishing its working life. It has now been fully restored by the Didcot Rail Centre and can be seen here on the traverser in front of the engine sheds building up a head of steam in preparation for shunting duties.

A digital art image of Castle Class locomotive 'Pendennis Castle' waiting at a country station. This is a locomotive with a prodigious history. It left the Great Western Railway's Swindon works in 1924 and in 1925 successfully took part in trials against the A4 Pacifics on the LNER between Kings Cross and Doncaster. In 1925 it was exhibited in the British Empire Exhibition as the most powerful express locomotive. It was finally withdrawn from service in 1964 and is now preserved at Didcot.

Trojan, Didcot, August 2021 "Trojan" is an 0-4-0 ST (Saddle Tank) locomotive, built in 1897 by the Avonside Engine Company of Bristol. She was originally operated by Messrs Dunn & Shute of Newport Town Dock and later by the Alexandra Docks Railway, also in Newport (South Wales). In 1923, the Alexandra Docks Railway was absorbed into the Great Western Railway and Trojan was allocated the number 1340. Withdrawn from service by the GWR in 1932, that certainly wasn't the end of the line for Trojan. She moved to the Netherseal colliery in Burton-on-Trent and then onto Alders of Tamworth in 1947, before arriving at Didcot in 1968. Several years of restoration followed, and the engine re-entered service in 2002 after a major boiler refit. Date:...

Lady of Legend, August 2021 Locomotive number 2999 'Lady of Legend' is something of a rarity since none of the original Saint Class locomotives designed by George Jackson Churchward for the Great Western Railway were preserved. That being the case, the Didcot Railway Centre (Oxfordshire, England) began a project in the 1970s to build a new 'Saint'. Lady of Legend (completed in 2019 after many months of painstaking restoration work) is the end result. The frames and boiler were adapted from a Hall class locomotive 'Maindy Hall', recovered from Woodham Brothers scrapyard in Barry, South Wales. Date: 15th August 2021.

King Edward II, Didcot, August 2021 Resplendent in its blue British Railways livery, King class locomotive number 6023, King Edward II was built in Swindon in 1930, and spent most of its working life hauling passenger trains between London Paddington and Devon. The 'Kings' were the most powerful locomotives to work the Great Western Railway routes. Sold for scrap in 1962, KIng Edward II then spent over 20 years in a South Wales scrapyard, before eventually ending up at Didcot Railway Centre, in Oxfordshire, where it was rebuilt in a major engineering project taking a further 20 years. Two Tanks, Didcot, August 2021 Two 'Great Western' tank engines on display at the Didcot Railway Centre (Oxfordshire, England), On the left is an 0-4-0 ST (Saddle Tank) loco, number 1338, built for the Cardiff railway in 1898. On the right is a 2-6-2T engine, number 5572, built at Swindon works in 1929. Just visible in the shed to the rear is GWR diesel railcar, number 22. These were introduced in the 1930s and were the forerunner to more modern diesel multiple units (DMUs). Date: 15th August 2021.

Restoration Project This Great Western Railway 4900 'Hall Class' steam locomotive 'Dumbleton Hall' currently sits 'awaiting overhaul' at Buckfastleigh station on the South Devon Railway (Devon, England). The Hall Class locomotives were developed by Charles Collett, the GWR's chief mechanical engineer from 1922 to 1941. This particular locomotive, built in Swindon, Wiltshire in 1929 is named after a Tudor-style, manor house near Evesham (now a hotel). She was originally stationed at Old Oak Common (West London), and after spells based at Oxford, Cardiff and Reading she was transferred to the West Country.
