Somewhere near the Shadow Mountains in the year 1983, Red Miller lives with his girlfriend, artist Mandy Bloom, in a cabin near the lake. Red works as a logger, while Mandy has a day job as a cashier at a nearby gas station in the woods. She creates elaborate fantasy art, and Red admires her work greatly. They lead a quiet and reclusive life, and their conversations and behavior hint at a complicated past and psychological hardship. Red appears to be a recovering alcoholic and possible veteran, and Mandy recounts traumatic childhood experiences. On her way to work, Mandy walks past a van carrying the Children of the New Dawn, a deviant hippie cult led by Jeremiah Sand.

The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers is an underground comic about three stoner freaks (similar to, but distinct from, hippies) from San Francisco. The trio first appeared in The Rag, an underground newspaper published in Austin, Texas, beginning in May 1968, and were regularly reprinted in underground papers around the United States and in other parts of the world. Later, their adventures were published in a series of comic books. The lives of the Freak Brothers revolve around the procurement and enjoyment of recreational drugs, particularly marijuana. The comics present a critique of the establishment while satirizing counterculture. The freaks consist of Freewheelin' Franklin Freek, Phineas T. Phreak, and Fat Freddy Freekowtski.

On April 19, 1943 medical research chemist Albert Hofmann, intrigued by the effects after an accidental exposure, tested an ergotamine he had derived while seeking a treatment of migraine/respiratory problems. Confused by the effects of the first LSD trip, he rode his bicycle home to rest in bed till he felt better. He never felt better but he did come down and spent the rest of his life exploring and promoting the use of the psychoactive compound as it benefits mankind. Bicycle Day celebrates this event and Hofmann’s discovery.
