Memento mori: Skull and soul as something like a butterfly with aheel of fortune.The butterfly as image of the soul is in stark contrast to death’s head. Both sit above the wheel of fortune. The wheel of fortune “can make the rich (symbolized by the purple cloth on the left) poor and the poor (symbolized by the goatskin at right) rich.” Contemplating the ephemeral of life as represented in the image, we realize that both states are very precarious, with death never far and life hanging by a thread: when it breaks, the soul (symbolized by the butterfly) flies off. Salve is Latin for "hi!" Mosaics like this were often placed in doorways like our "welcome" mats! This particular design was derived from an antique print in "An illustrated dictionary of words used in art and archaeology. Explaining terms frequently used in works on architecture, arms, bronzes, Christian art, colour, costume, decoration, devices, emblems, heraldry, lace, personal ornaments, pottery, painting, sculpture, &c., with their derivations" (1883)

I recreated this colorful design after a mosaic of a Roman villa of Pont d'Ancy in Northern France. The original colors were not as bright but quite close.

This beautiful Roman mosaic demonstrates three Roman ideas 1) momento mori (remember death (reminding one to live life to the fullest) 2) tempus fugit (time flies represented by the butterfly) 3) rota fortunae (wheel of fortune representing life being controlled by fate, the wheel supporting the skull and the clothes of a rich woman on left and a peasant woman on left.

I recreated this classical and elegant design from a 2nd century Roman mosaic in the city of Vesontio (modern Besancon in French Franche Comte) The original colors are different.

Mosaics from the thermal baths built by the emperor Trajan Decius (249-251 AD),It represents two masks resting on the projecting base of two walls arranged at an angle, seen in perspective; two flutes lean against a wall, casting their shadow on it. The female mask portrays a woman with large eyes and a wide open mouth; in her hair, curled in long curls, a ribbon is tied, tied in a bow over the center of the forehead. In man the physiognomic features are accentuated and ridiculed: the huge mouth, the wide and flattened nose, the protruding eyes, the wrinkled cheeks, on the head a crown of ivy and berries, an ornament linked to the Dionysian cult,

Roman seafood mosaic. Mosaics consist of small pieces of coloured glass or stone, used to form an image or pattern on a floor or wall. This marine fauna mosaic is from the House of the Faun, in Pompeii, Italy, and accurately depicts over twenty forms of fish, shellfish and eels. At centre, an octopus attacks a lobster. Surrounding them are dogfish, morays, sea basses, sea breams, mullets, and electric rays. This mosaic is displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Naples, Italy.
