Not just another Bloody Mary

The parish church of St Mary the Virgin at Ipsden in Oxfordshire on the southern edge of the Chiltern Hills. The church overlooks the Thames Valley and is surrounded by farmland. Originally a small Saxon chapel, it was enlarged in the 12th century with stones from a nearby church which had fallen into disrepair. This image has been given a faded, vntage feel.

This lovely church sits in the centre of the village next to the road which leads to Newbury. It's a Grade 1 listed Norman church close to the remains of a motte-and-bailey Norman castle. The church, dating from the C12th was largely rebuilt in the C13th. The tower is C15th.

The parish church of St Mary the Virgin in the village of Aldworth in West Berkshire. Overlooking the Berkshire Downs, this picturesque C14th church contains large effigies of the De la Beche family - the men in full armour and the women in the dress of the period. These are commonly known as 'the Aldworth Giants' due to their size. In the churchyard is an ancient yew tree which is estimated to be over 1000 years old!

The church of St Mary the Virgin at Aldworth, Berkshire, viewed across the nearby meadow with resident calf. The church is notable for its large effigies of the De la Beche family from the 14th century - known as The Aldwoth Giants! This is apparently unique for a small parish church. Aldworth is in West Berkshire on the edge of the North Wessex Downs.

Finished as a pastel drawing, the church of St Mary the Virgin and adjoining almshouses at Ewelme in Oxfordshire, close to Wallingford and Benson. The medieval complex of buildings which includes a school was founded by the De la Pole family in 1437 with profits from the wool trade, Alice de la Pole was the granddaughter of Geoffrey Chaucer, her tomb being in the church. This is also one of the oldest medieval brick buildings.

Chorio, the old capital of Halki (Chalki), with 4,000 inhabitants in its heyday, is now deserted and mostly in ruins. Built around the hill upon which the remains of the Kastro stands (the castle of the Medieval Knights of St John), the town was built in a position concealed from view from the sea, and high above the initial maraudings of pirates. On August 14th, the population ascends to Chorio for the Festival of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, when the beautiful Church of the Virgin Mary (Panagia) is opened, and the church hall is full, with feasting and dancing. The church has a number of beautiful frescoes that make it a major tourist attraction.

Tewkesbury Abbey Number of views as of 17th March 2018 = 480. The Abbey Church of St Mary the Virgin, Tewkesbury (Gloucestershire, England), also known as Tewkesbury Abbey, is claimed to be the second largest parish church in England. Formerly a Benedictine monastery, work started on the current church in 1102, though the monastery may have been founded 500 years earlier. Other notable events in the Abbey's history: In May 1471, after the Battle of Tewkesbury (in the Wars of the Roses), some of the defeated Lancastrians sought sanctuary in the abbey. The Yorkists led by King Edward IV (victors on this occasion), forced their way into the abbey; the resulting atrocities caused the building to be closed for a month until it could be purifi...

St Marys, Chipping Norton Number of views as of 18th September 2017 = 170. The wool trade brought wealth to the Cotswold town of Chipping Norton (Oxfordshire, England) in the Middle Ages. The parish church of St Mary the Virgin dates from the 12th century and retains features from the 13th and 14th centuries, though parts of it have been rebuilt more recently such as the Bell Tower in 1825. Date: 14th February 2016.

Joos van Cleve (Joos van der Beke; c. 1485 – 1540/1541) was a painter active in Antwerp around 1511 to 1540. He is known for combining traditional Netherlandish painting techniques with influences of more contemporary Renaissance painting styles. An active member and co-deacon of the Guild of Saint Luke of Antwerp, he is known mostly for his religious works and portraits of royalty. As a skilled technician, his art shows sensitivity to color and a unique solidarity of figures. He was one of the first to introduce broad landscapes in the backgrounds of his paintings, which would become a popular technique of sixteenth century northern Renaissance paintings.
