The new-for-'62 Chevy II was based around a new series of small engines, but engineers included enough space to fit a small-block V-8 which of course, is what every hot rodder wants in a lightweight, compact car like the Nova. For $1,500 one could install a small-block V-8 in any 1962 or '63 Chevy II, from the cheapest two-door sedan to the top-of-the-line Nova 400 convertible. Seeing buyers upgrading to V8 power, Chevrolet eventually relented, offering special a 170-hp 283 and 250-hp 327 engines for the Chevy II. With more ponies under the hood, these lightweight cars were not only spirited drivers, but made for excellent street racers that could hold their own against the big boys and even dominate with some upgrades and tuning.

The Datsun B210 was a compact rear-wheel-drive with funky, yet sporty looks and excellent fuel economy. These cars sold like crazy during its 1974-1978 run, though rust killed most B210s quickly in the corrosion-prone regions of the America. The top level GX models were largely appearance and convenience packages, though were presented as being higher performance in many of the ads of the era.

In the '60s, chromed factory steel wheels had taken the shows and streets by storm. Fat-fendered radical customs with their chopped tops, sectioned bodies and other extensive modifications were falling out of favor, with radically painted late model cars now dominating the world of customs. It was around this time that several manufacturers saw that an affordably priced custom wheel was something that the hot rod and custom world desperately needed. Gardenia, California's Astro Custom Wheels was one of the many builders who threw their hat into the ring, making wheels that were equal parts show and go, so you could cruise the boulevard on Friday night, but tear up the quarter mile on Saturday morning.

In 1973, British tuner Spike Anderson went solo, launching Race Head Services, and his new Datsun 240Z was his first customer. The cylinder head specialist worked his magic on the 151-hp straight-six, which lead to developing his own exhaust manifold. Next came a custom triple carb setup, tuned suspension, and big brakes. Now delivering 250-hp and handling like a true race car, the Z was suddenly in direct competition with Germany's fastest coupés. He took his Z to the '74 Modsports race, and fought off all comers, including factory backed racers. With requests to build copies of his Z piling up, Anderson started Samuri Motor Company to build track ready Datsun's, calling the resulting car's 'Super Samuri.'

The BolDor is a 24-hour endurance race for motorcycles, held annually in France, with riding of each bike shared by a team of three riders. The first one was held in 1922, and was a race for motorcycles, and automobiles limited to 1100cc engine capacity (in the 1950s the limit was raised to 1500cc, and later to 2000cc). Today, the BolDor is exclusively a race for motorcycles, although there are a number of side attractions, such as races for amateur riders and for classic bikes. The race has been held at numerous venues across France, but the 1976 race was hosted at Le Mans.
