The Holy City Zoo was a small but influential comedy club in San Francisco that originally opened in 1971. Located at 408 Clement Street between 5th and 6th Avenues in San Francisco's Richmond District, the club was a dark cavern that had a maximum occupancy of 78. There was a small stage set against the back wall, a bar that sold beer, wine, and soft drinks, and a set of stairs at stage left that led to a small balcony known as "The John Wilkes Booth." The club got its peculiar name from a sign the original owner picked up at a going-out-of-business sale for a zoo in Holy City. The Zoo originally opened up as a folk music venue, but after adding a comedy night, comics looking for a venue found the Zoo, crowded out the folk musiic.
