The Mitchell Brothers O’Farrell Theatre is said to be the first in the country to get the girls off the stage and onto the laps of the customers, thus creating the 'lap dance' as we know them today and a new adult entertainment experience that would be replicated by countless other clubs across the country for decades to come. After scoring a home run with the new live sex acts and stripping performance format, Hunter S. Thompson declared the theatre "the Carnegie Hall of public sex in America." In 1972 the brothers produced their own adult film starring Marilyn Chambers. Titled Behind the Green Door, the movie would go on to ultimately gross over $50 million, making it one of the most successful adult movies of all time.
