In the mid 1830's, tensions were rising as a number of fanctions sought independence from Mexico. Among these factions was a group led by Captain William Scott. While some argued for negotiation and reasoning with Mexico, Scott's independent radicals made their aims very clear on their battle flag. Independence was the rallying cry and they wanted it without delay. Captain Scott’s Independence Flag became a symbol of the Texas War of Independence from Mexico. Texas eventually declared its Independence on March 2, 1836.
