Owned by Lou Walters, the father of famed news broadcaster Barbara Walters, The Latin Quarter in Boston was the first in a chain of nightclubs that would later include locations in New York and Miami. The club, which opened in October 1937, oozed glamour and indulgence, with draped walls and sophisticated décor. The faux French theme was an instant success, drawing people for the twice-nightly floor shows with girls in exotic, sometimes barely-there dress. The club’s draperies were stripped away following the Cocoanut Grove tragedy, as nightclubs attempted to decrease potential fire hazards.
