Our Lady of Suyapa is the holiest Catholic church in Honduras and is situated in one of the more historical areas of the City of Tegucigalpa in the outskirts. In the old days, a visit to The Shrine of Our Lady of Suyapa was as an out of town trip. But the city has grown since, and today, it is a village that is part of Tegus. The Shrine is on the North Eastern side of the city, close to the National University of Honduras. Our Lady of Suyapa is the Patron Saint of Honduras. The Church held its first service back in 1777. Pope Pious XI declared her the Patron of Honduras in 1925, and Pope Francis gave it the status of Basilica on the 9th of September, 2015. The Shrine consists of two different buildings.
