Built in 1808 and decommissioned in 1958, The Gibraltar Point Lighthouse on the Toronto Islands is the oldest lighthouse on the Great Lakes and is one of the oldest buildings in the city. Local legend tells of John Paul Radelmuller, the first of Gibraltar Points keepers and beer bootlegger. Radelmuller was murdered by soldiers from nearby Fort York during a drunken dispute over his bootlegged beer. His body was chopped up and hidden by the soldiers. It is said that Mr. Radelmuller can still sometimes be seen walking the grounds of the lighthouse.
