Diesel 'Railcars' or Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) such as this one began to replace steam engines on the British railway network in the late 1950s. This particular unit is a class 117 and is pictured at Cheltenham Racecourse station on the Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway. 123 of these units were built by the Pressed Steel Company from 1959 onwards, and some remained in service with British Rail until the year 2000. Powered by two Leyland diesel engines and capable of a maximum speed of 70 miles per hour, the standard configuration was to run two powered units, back to back, with an un-powered carriage in the middle. Date: 27th May 2014.
