View of monastery from ground level. The Sitagu Association was founded by the Venerable Sayadaw, Ashin Nyanissara, Abbot of Sitagu Monastery, in 1980 on the full-moon day of Kason (Vesak). That date marked the 2604th anniversary of the Buddha's birth, as well as being the commemoration day of three other sacred events in the Blessed Ones' life; the Prophesy, the Enlightenment and the Great Demise. The Sitagu Association is based at Sitagu Monastery in the Sagaing Hills, Sagaing, Burma. Situated on the banks of the Irrawaddy River, some fifteen miles south of Mandalay, the Sagaing Hills have for many centuries been an important center of Theravada Buddhism and of Burmese Buddhist culture and civilization.
