It is also where the Midway Geyser Basin boardwalk begins a loop trail. In 1878, the Hayden Expedition named this pool for its milky, white bottom and gem-like, blue-colored water. Another thermal pool along the boardwalk in the Midway Geyser Basin is Opal Pool. . Though usually active as a hot spring,approximate temperature of 132 °F (56 °C), Opal Pool is considered a fountain-type geyser though eruptions are infrequent. The first recorded eruption of Opal Pool was in 1947 and it occurred infrequently until they stopped in 1953. The eruptions reemerged in 1979 erupting without much warning. Boardwalk to the Grand Prismatic Yellowstone Wyoming Midway Geyser Basin contains a small collection of mammoth-sized springs. Midway is actually part of the Lower Geyser Basin but because of its isolated location between the main features of Lower and Upper geyser basins it became known as Midway. In 1889, Rudyard Kipling, who visited Yellowstone, referred to it as "Hell's Half Acre." Even today it is still remembered by that name. And though it is the smallest geyser basin, Midway possesses two of the largest hot springs in the world. Grand Prismatic Spring, nearly 370 feet in diameter, sits upon a large mound surrounded by small step-like terraces. The other feature, Excelsior Geyser, was once the largest geyser in the world before ...

Boiling water is so full of energy

The boiling frog is an apologue describing a frog being slowly boiled alive. The premise is that if a frog is put suddenly into boiling water, it will jump out, but if the frog is put in tepid water which is then brought to a boil slowly, it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death. The story is often used as a metaphor for the inability or unwillingness of people to react to or be aware of sinister threats that arise gradually rather than suddenly.

Miniature Forests on the Edge of Grand Prismatic Spring by Debra Martz Within the rainbow of orange, brown and red colors, some microorganisms live in communities of thick mats. Like a miniature forest, there are microbes that live on or near the top, similar to a forest canopy, using sunlight to perform photosynthesis to fuel the community. Organisms living deeper in the mat, similar to a forest understory, derive energy from the chemicals produced by the surface microbes. Just like a forest's counterparts, all of these organisms create an ecosystem in the expanse of a few inches depth. Life On The Edge of Hot Springs In Yellowstone by Debra Martz The billions of colorful microorganisms lining the hot springs' runoff channels are called extremophiles because they live in conditions that were once thought to be too extreme to host life. Extremophiles that live in hot springs are called thermophiles, heat-loving microorganisms. Excelsior Runoff to Firehole River Yellowstone Wyoming When entering the Midway Geyser Basin you cross a walking bridge over Firehole River where you can already "see the heat" of Excelsior Geysor. "The Firehole River starts and ends in Yellowstone National Park. It flows through many hydrothermal areas: Lone Star Geyser Basin, Upper Geyser Basin, Midway Geyser Basin, and the Lower Geyser Basin. Clepsydra Geyser shows by far the highest level of activity in the Fountain Group along the Fountain Paint Pot Trail/boardwalk. Red Spouter Yellowstone Wyoming by Debra Martz Prior to August 17, 1959 Red Spouter did not exist, it was just a grassy knoll. Then, just before midnight, a 7.3 earthquake 25 miles away at Lake Hebgen sent jolts through Yellowstone and Red Spouter was born. It goes through changes during the year as a hot spring after winter melt, to a mud pot late summer and a fumarole by fall nearly dry, just releasing steam.
