Bournemouth T-Shirts

One of the groyne markers on the beach between Branksome Chine, Poole and Alum Chine, Bournemouth on the Dorset coast. On the horizon, you can see the white cliffs of Alum Bay and The Needles on the Isle of Wight.

*Longham Lakes, November 2020* Longham Lakes (Dorset, England) are a pair of reservoirs, not far away from the towns of Bournemouth, Poole, Wimborne and Ferndown, and the smaller villages of Longham and Hampreston. The Lakes are one of my favourite spots in East Dorset, a haven for bird life and a popular retreat for fishermen, bird watchers and others just enjoying the countryside. Date: 4th November 2020.

Hengistbury Head Land Train The land train at Hengistbury Head (near Bournemouth, Dorset, England) carried passengers from the popular 'Hiker' cafe near the main car park down to Mudeford Spit and back, and ran every day of the year except Christmas Day. Known affectionately to locals as the 'Noddy Train', it had nothing whatsoever to do with Enid Blyton's character of the same name! Sadly, after many years of service, the original land trains have been replaced by a more modern vehicle. The journey is 1.5 miles and takes approximately 15 minutes. Date: 6th August 2016.

*Sandcastle Building, Boscombe, March 2021* You know what they say - as guys get older, the only thing that changes is the size (and price) of their toys. Here's the proof. Forget buckets and spades, here's the latest in sandcastle building tech. Or ... Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole's latest sand replenishment project - apparently the team is working 24/7 to top up the beaches in time for the holiday season. Date: 14th March 2021.

Boscombe Pier Number of views as of 21st June 2018 = 650. Boscombe lies a couple of miles to the east of Bournemouth, Dorset on the south coast of England. The Boscombe Pier Company was formed in 1886 and construction of the town's pier commenced in 1888. The first pile was driven into the sea bed by Lady Shelley, daughter-in law of the poet Percy Shelley. Simply designed as a promenade deck with a landing stage at the head, the 600ft (183m) wood and iron pier was opened by the Duke of Argyll on 29th July 1889 at a cost of around £12,000. It was sold to Bournemouth Corporation in 1904. Buildings were erected at both the shoreward and seaward ends in a bid to attract more visitors, and one unusual feature was the skeleton of a 65ft (19.6m...

Fairground Attraction The 'big wheel' fairground ride in front of my home town's Central Library. This was one of the star attractions during Bournemouth's 2016 Wheels Festival. Location: The Triangle, Bournemouth, Dorset, England. Date: 23rd May 2016.

Turbary Collage, February 2021 Turbary Common is the largest remaining area of heathland in North Bournemouth (Dorset, England) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Despite being surrounded on all sides by industrial and residential neighbourhoods, the common is a haven for wildlife, including rare birds and all six species of British reptile. Date: 26th February 2021.

Poole Bay Number of views as of 18th October 2018 = 850. The broad sweep of Poole Bay, stretching from Poole in the West, past Bournemouth and Boscombe out to Hengistbury Head. This was taken from Canford Cliffs, the deserted beach confirming the belief that the best parts of Bournemouth are actually in Poole! *Boscombe Pier and Purbeck, January 2022* Great light overlooking Boscombe Pier earlier this week, with the Purbeck Hills across Poole Bay in the distance. A couple of jet skiers enjoy the calm, sunny, if rather chilly conditions. Date: 16th January 2022. Location: Boscombe East, Bournemouth, Dorset, England.

As Nature Intended Number of views as of 24th January 2018 = 940. Sometimes, no matter what you do to a shot, you can't improve on what Mother Nature intended. So it proved with this shot. After playing around with the contrast, saturation and various filters, I decided I liked it best straight from the camera. So here it is, a beautiful pink azalea, captured on a spring day in the Upper Gardens, Bournemouth, Dorset, England. Hope you like it. Date: 12th May 2010.

Millhams Mead, February 2021 Millhams Mead is a small nature reserve near Kinson (North Bournemouth, Dorset, England). A small stream runs through the reserve before joining the River Stour near Longham Bridge. Date: 28th February 2021.

Shetland Cattle, Turbary Common, March 2021 Shetland cattle (or Shetland kye) are a small, hardy, horned cattle breed from the Shetland Islands to the north of mainland Scotland. They are usually black and white in colour. Somewhat strange, then, to find them a long way from home down in the south of England, on Turbary Common in Bournemouth, Dorset. Apparently, they were first introduced here in 2006 as part of the grazing management plan for the common. Date: 7th March 2021.

*St Andrews, Kinson, January 2021* The Parish Church of St. Andrew's, Kinson, North Bournemouth (Dorset, England). One of the oldest churches in the Bournemouth area, the tower is believed to date from Norman times, around 1100 A.D. and there may even have been a Saxon church on this site 150 years before that. Although about 4 miles from the coast, the village of Kinson was once a haven for smugglers. This would have been long before nearby Bournemouth became a fashionable seaside resort or the large conurbation that it is today. St Andrew's Church is said to have been at the centre of a network of underground tunnels, with the church tower used as a look-out post. Hengistbury Head is a former stone age, bronze age and iron age settlement, and is now a popular nature reserve. Date: 4th February 2018.

St Peter's Church is a Church of England parish church located in the heart of Bournemouth, Dorset, England. It is a Grade I listed building and was completed in 1879 to a design by G.E. Street as the founding mother church of Bournemouth.

Tradium Arcadium Number of views as of 8th May 2019 = 675. This is the Victorian shopping arcade in Seamore Road, Westbourne, Bournemouth, created by Henry Joy in 1884. A visionary in my opinion! Here you can find proper shops! Not a high street name to be seen. There are even 22 gargoyles who leer and grin at the shoppers below! Not that many of the shoppers notice, it has to be said. Westbourne is one of the most elegant parts of Bournemouth. Despite the disappearance of many of it's fine Victorian villas, there is still an atmosphere of gracious living. In the 19th century Westbourne consisted of wild heath land with pine-wooded chines, frequented by smugglers, and used for hiding contraband. Date: 14th September 2008.

Pier of the Year Number of views as of 18th September 2017 = 530. Boscombe Pier, Bournemouth (Dorset, England). Voted Pier of the Year by the National Piers Society in 2010. Named as Britain’s 'coolest' pier in 2009 by website Nothing To See Here. Date: 21st January 2012.

Allium Number of views as of 19th April 2018 = 360. With over 800 known species, the allium is one of the largest plant genera in the world. As well as decorative, flowering specimens such as this one, the genus includes garden vegetables such as onions, shallots and leeks and herbs including garlic and chives. This one was pictured in Bournemouth Gardens, Dorset, England. Date: 25th May 2010.

*Boscombe Pier, January 2022* Boscombe Pier has had a somewhat chequered history. Construction began in October 1888, and the pier opened in July 1889, but initially was not very successful. It was taken over by the council in 1904 and buildings were erected at the entrance and on the pier-head. Facilities included a busy steamer landing stage. During World War 2, the pier was breached for defence reasons. In the 1960s, a restaurant and the Mermaid Theatre were built at the pier-head, though the ‘Theatre’ initially opened as a roller-skating rink. By the 1990s, the Mermaid had fallen into disrepair and it was demolished in 2008, replaced by a simpler viewing and fishing platform. I particularly like this view, showin...
