Gold Circle Department Store

Carson Pirie Scott & Company was a regional department store chain that operating 51 stores in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. In 1904 the firm moved into a 12-story building on State Street, a beautiful tower designed by the renowned American architect Louis Sullivan. This distinctive building was named a Chicago Historical Landmark in 1959.

Remembering the G Fox Department Store. Hartford, Connecticut. G. Fox & Co. was a dominant retail store in the southern New England area for most of the twentieth century. It was the largest privately held department store in the nation when it was sold to the May Department Stores Company in 1965. The G. Fox flagship store was known for customer attractions, including a large walk-through Christmas display and a talking myna bird housed in a huge cage located on the fifth floor. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places within Hartford’s Department Store Historic District.

Remembering the great Marshall Field’s Department Store. Marshall Field's was a department store in Chicago, Illinois, founded in the 19th century that grew to become a large chain before being acquired by Macy's, Inc in 2005. Marshall Field's great six-story merchandising emporium catered to urban women with leisure time. Rather than "buyer beware," Field's motto was "Give the lady what she wants." He had that motto displayed on a sign above his desk.

Remebering Thalhimers Department Store. Thalhimers was a department store chain in the South. Based in Richmond, Virginia, the venerable chain at its peak operated dozens of stores in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and one store in Memphis, Tennessee. Thalhimer's traditions were most notable during the holiday season with visits from the sticker-distributing Snow Bear and, in later years, the arrival of Lego Land at the downtown Richmond store. Its luxurious restaurant, the Richmond Room, was the source of many recipes still published today. The Richmond Room also had a fast food spin-off, the fried chicken chain Golden Skillet.

Remembering Halle's Department Store. The official name was The Halle Bros. Co, but we all called it Halle's, The store was used as the location of the fictional department store, Winfred-Louder, in the television series, "The Drew Carey Show". Actress Halle Berry, a native of Cleveland, was named after the store. This and Higbee's were the beloved department stores in Cleveland Ohio in the 50's 60's.and 70's.

Remembering the B. Altman Department Store. B. Altman and Company was a luxury department store and chain, founded in 1865 in New York City, New York, by Benjamin Altman. On March 12, 1985, Altman's Fifth Avenue building was designated a New York City landmark. The Manhattan B. Altman store featured in the storyline of the television series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, in which the main character, Midge Maisel, takes a job on the shop floor. Exterior scenes were filmed at the store's former Fifth Avenue building.

Remembering Famous Barr Department Store. The Railway Exchange Building in downtown St. Louis was the home to the flagship Famous-Barr store and headquarters of the May Department Stores Company. It was the first air-conditioned department store in the country. Back in the day, this Famous-Barr store was the place to see and be seen. Christmas shopping at this department store was an event, so much so that memories of visiting the store or even just stopping by to check out the elaborate displays in the windows is a happy memory for generations of St. Louisans.

Remembering the beloved Higbee's Department Store in Cleveland Ohio. We all called it Higbee's, but for years the name on all their advertising was The Higbee Company. This was their logo. It is also the department store featured in the movie A Christmas Story, where Ralphie Parker first sees the Red Rider BB Gun.

Remembering the beautiful I. Magnin Department Store. I. Magnin & Company was a San Francisco, California-based high fashion and specialty goods luxury department store. When designer Christian Dior visited SF, he toured the Union Square store and called it the "White Marble Palace". Over the course of its existence, I Magnin expanded across the West into Southern California and the adjoining states of Arizona, Oregon, and Washington. In the 1970s, under Federated Department Stores ownership, the chain entered the Chicago, Illinois, and Washington, DC, metropolitan areas.

Remembering Gimbels Department Store. Founded in Indiana and then relocating to Milwaukee, Gimbels eventually opened stores in Philadelphia and New York. With its arrival in New York, Gimbels soon became the primary rival to the leading NY retailer, Macy's. Despite its limited presence, Gimbels was well-known nationwide.  Gimbels gained publicity from the 1947 film Miracle on 34th Street, the 1967 film Fitzwilly, and was frequently mentioned as a shopping destination of Lucy Ricardo and Ethel Mertz on the hit 1950s TV series I Love Lucy. And of course it is where Will Ferrell works in Elf.

Joseph Horne Company (Horne's) Department Store, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania

Frugal's Department Store has been in business since 1939. "Now you're shopping with cents" has been their slogan since 1955 due the fact that all of their clothing - at the time - used to cost under $3.00. That, of course, is not the case now. Due to their lack of originality (as well as their recent label of having the highest prices in retail) Frugal's is facing foreclosure.

Ames Department Stores Inc. was an American chain of discount stores based in Rocky Hill, Connecticut, United States. The company was founded in 1958 with a store in Southbridge, Massachusetts, and at its peak operated 700 stores in 20 states, including the Northeast, Upper South, Midwest, and the District of Columbia, making it the fourth-largest discount retailer in the country.
