Founded in 1925, Mallory initially developed OEM ignition systems for many early cars, but by the '50s, they were known for their aftermarket systems for hot rods and drag racers who needed more oomph to get their high-compression engines to light and for those needing more adjustability for fine-tuning and keeping their monster motors humming along. Mighty Mallory was a fun superhero inspired character introduced in 1962 and was most commonly found on decals handed out at drag racing events.

Back in the '30s, Phil Weiand didn’t have technology to assist him in finding customers for his performance intake manifolds. He did, however, have a bit of marketing savvy. Late at night, he’d go where the Los Angeles street racers gathered to set up their matches, scout out the losers of those matches, and ask them if they wanted to go faster, promising that his dual-carb manifolds would help them do exactly that. He delivered the goods and the rest is as they say, hot rod history.

Carlsbad Raceway was a motorsport facility located in Carlsbad, California that featured a ¼ mile drag strip and motocross track, which first opened in 1964. The track was popular with local street racers as it hosted Saturday afternoon grudge races where drivers could square off against their friends (and enemies) in a classic 'run what you brung' event. Motorsports activities were shut down in August 2004 and a business park was erected on the land once occupied by the raceway.

The Weiand Company started as a performance parts warehouse in the 1930s, selling a variety of early speed parts. The first Weiand product, the world's first aluminum intake manifold. debuted in 1937. Weiland would go on to create some of the most innovative performance intake manifolds available while also developing some of the most sought after superchargers ever made.

The York US30 Dragway was located at the York Airport in Thomasville, Pennsylvania from '65 until '79 by Oscar Hostetter. The South Penn Hot Rod Council first ran drag races at the airport site on a limited schedule from '55 until '59, when promoter Bill Holz assumed control in '60, operating it as York US30 Drag-O-Way. Hostetter took over again in '65, operating the facility as the York US30 Dragway, and putting on the biggest event in drag racing history – the 1965 Super Stock Nationals. Others followed, but none have attained the notoriety or attendance of the '65 event, which is still the largest single day drag race in American history.

John's story follows him and the Milner Racing Team crew through a series of personal and professional ups and downs, culminating in a fatal finale. This Milner Racing Team design is a replica based on a screen used tee, ensuring it's accurate to those seen in the film.

Irwindale Raceway, was located unironically in Irwindale, California, and opened up in 1965 just after the San Gabriel Drag Strip closed in 1963. Compared to the likes of Orange County and Lions, Irwindale wasn’t a fancy track by any means, but had its charms to say the least. Irwindale the place to be in Southern California on a Saturday night and thanks to the (then) remote location, they ran well into the small hours and the crowds were there for it! Like all too many drag strips, pressure by development ruined a good thing. In 1977, the City of Irwindale bought the property and essentially gave it away for development of a large brewery facility.

In 1965 Pontiac promoted their new GTO and Hurst Performance Products. The contest was based on special album recorded by The Tigers and the grand prize was a special 1965 Pontiac GTO named “GeeTO Tiger”. It was specially equipped with over 28 factory options and had special Hurst Gold body paint, Hurst mag wheels, even gold-plated Hurst Shifter, Tri-Power 4-speed gearbox, suspension package, power steering, power brakes, etc. GeeTO Tiger was specially designed for the contest. Ace Wilson's Royal Pontiac dealership campaigned numerous race prepped GTO's over the years and they were well known as drag strip killers.
