Another view painted from my trips to Rye. This small (8x8 inch) oil painting is from the very top of Lion Street, with the last shop, right outside the church door. With the bulk of the church to the South its a shady passage, but you get interesting effects from the light that makes it there.

The Griffin is a mythical creature known as a half-eagle, half-lion in various cultures. In legends and folklore, the beast guards the gold of the kings, as well as other priceless possessions. Moved into the far north, this ancient creature watches over the green gold inherent in the forests.

Eulogized as the “best knight that ever lived”, William Marshal was an epitome of a medieval warrior. His colourful life was full of tournaments, adventures, fights and court intrigues, as he began his journey as a humble knight-errant, later turned into a leader of his own jousting team, and then into one of most revered nobles in England, who understood that self-restraint and generosity were the cornerstones of a good ruler.
