This image is of Medicine Lake in Jasper National Park, in Alberta, Canada. An interesting fact about the lake is that it has no obvious outlet. There's no stream or river to which the water flows, and yet the level of the lake goes up and down with the season. The answer is that the stream or river is subterranean, flowing out from beneath the surface of the lake. That aside, the lake is set in the most spectacular scenery of the Rockies. The day I captured this image, the air was so clear with just a hint of clouds to give the sky some texture. The deep blue of the sky, the mountains, the trees; there was a majesty about the place.

When I saw that the skies were staying clear, I headed out for a bit of night photography -- after all, what else should I have done on the last day of the Jasper Dark Sky Festival? I was pretty happy with my shots while I was there -- and even happier when I got home and realised I'd captured a bit of aurora without even noticing. Truly an accidental aurora! The rocks of the gorge at Athabasca Falls are fascinating. Not only are they stunning colours, but the shapes betray how years and years of water movement have shaped the entirety of the gorge.

Sometimes a photo just tickles your fancy. This is one of them. I captured this image as we were driving through Jasper National Park along the Yellowhead Highway and I didn't notice the clouds at the time. Now, all I can see when I look at this image is a thought bubble above the summit of the middle mountain! I wonder what the mountain was thinking?

Lake Louise is a hamlet in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies, known for its turquoise, glacier-fed lake ringed by high peaks and overlooked by a stately chateau. A week before the Jasper SkyTram closed for the season and there was already plenty of snow at the top! What we anticipated to be a fairly short trip up turned into a full afternoon of walking around on the top of Mount Whistlers, enjoying the crunch of snow under our feet and the epic views all around us.

You never know what you're going to get in the mountains, particularly in winter. Like any photographer, I much prefer the moods with clouds than those completely without!

Moraine Lake is the most astonishing, aquamarine colour, the product of really tiny fragments of rock that are suspended in the water, Known as rock flour, these rock particles are the finely ground remains of the rock that lies beneath the glaciers as they grind downward towards the lake. I was up on the "Rockpiles", the rocky cluster of glacial debris at the bottom of the lake, when these two canoes went by. Framed by the lodge pole pines, the canoes seemed suspended over the water, not really in it, giving their presence a surreal feeling.

There's a great hike to take if you visit Lake Louise, in Banff National Park, but it's not to Lake Louise. High to the right of the lake resides a hidden, hanging valley that contains the beautiful Lake Agnes. Your climb up to the lake is rewarded by not only the view but also the wonderful tea house that's located there. There's no road to the tea house, and the staff bring up everything that is needed each day in backpacks. However, they do offer a wonderful selection of teas. Now more about the image. It was captured in the late afternoon, the Sun had already set in the valley, so the view was infused with the soft blue light from the deep blue sky. All was calm, not a ripple on the lake, and the view of the mountains was spectacular.

Moraine Lake is a natural masterpiece as you look up to the head of the lake, but if you turn back you can appreciate all that else surrounds the lake. Here is a view of the "Rockples", from which the millions of photos of the lake and the mountains surrounding it are taken, and the "Tower of Babel", the peak in the background.

Just a short detour from the Icefields Parkway in Alberta lies the incredibly beautiful Peyto Lake. It is an awe-inspiring experience to look down on the richly aquamarine-toned lake surrounded by magnificent mountains and the glaciers that feed the lake.

Athabasca Falls is a hugely popular summer destination, with its intense falls crashing into the gorge and leaving visitors in awe. While the falls were barely running when we visited in early March, I found the contrasts of winter just as impressive; the dark walls of the gorge against the pale blue skies above, and the deep aquamarine of the water with the white blanket of snow surrounding it. It's a place I will stop at time and again, no matter what time of year it is.
