These long little doggies come in Short Haired, Long Haired, and Wire Haired varieties. These wieners were bred for scenting and chasing burrow-dwelling game, specifically of badgers! The small size is perfect for charging down holes. It also explains their feisty demeanor. It takes some real guts to fight badgers! According to the AKC, these sausage links were voted 12th most popular breed in the US!

A 2020 genome sequencing project tracked ancient pre-European-contact dog DNA through modern breeds and found it in Chihuahuas! Nowadays Chihuahuas come in long haired and short haired varieties and many different colors.

The Basenji is an intelligent, excited little athletes with a strong loping stride. Originally bred for hunting, Basenjis don’t actually bark! Instead they make a yodeling sound called a “chortle” that is caused by the unusual shape of their larynx.

Can't Hardly Wait is a 1998 American teen romantic comedy starring an ensemble cast including Ethan Embry, Charlie Korsmo, Lauren Ambrose, Peter Facinelli, Seth Green, and Jennifer Love Hewitt, and is notable for a number of "before-they-were-famous" appearances by teen stars. The story takes place at a high school graduation party in the 1990s.

Once called “Overweight Pomeranians” by British dog shows, the British Kennel Club didn’t call them by their official names until 1916! Pronounced “case-hawnd,” the Keeshond is the national dog of the Netherlands. They are a member of the Nordic Siptz family, bred to ride barges in Amsterdam and is nicknamed the Smiling Dutchman. They have a two-layer coat to protect from water with silver and black markings. The dark patches around their eyes tend to look like a pair of spectacles! Keeshonden (the official plural of Keeshond) are very attentive and intelligent, and ready to do anything asked of them.

The breed this month is the Old English Sheepdog! Patient, agreeable, and very smart, the old-english sheepdog is equally good at working fields and guarding homes. Sometimes nicknamed Bob-tail, they're known for their bear-like gait and big fluffy rumps. Famous owners include many rich and famous people like industrialists Vanderbilts and Gugenheims, Franklin Deleno Roosevelt (his OES was named Tiny), Sir Paul McCartney, and the family of the For Better or For Worse comic strip. When you can see its eyes, The Old English Sheepdog's are Brown, Blue, or sometimes one of each!

The Akita is a historic breed from the mountains of Japan. They were used as guard dogs because they are a hardy breed with a thick double-layered coat. They're aloof with strangers, but very affectionate with family and loyal to their house. In 1931 the Akita Inu was declared a national treasure in Japan.

The Cavalier King Charles spaniel and the King Charles Cavalier spaniel are actually two different spaniels. They began as one, but the Cavalier King Charles has a longer nose in the 20th century when breeders made a join effort to return the breed back to it's origins before interbreeding with pugs to shorten their noses in the 17th century. The King Charles in the name is Charles II of England whose supporters called themselves Cavaliers.

They originate in Scotland and Northern England where they are used for herding. They were prized by Queen Victoria but you at home probably know them better as "Lassie."

Golden Retrievers are a breed of Scottish descent founded in the 19th century. They were used as gun dogs but nowadays are one of the most popular house pets and companion dogs in the world. Their gentle nature and obedience sees them trained as guide dogs, service dogs, and comfort dogs.

The origin of the name "Beagle" is unknown, although the common theory is that it comes from the French word "begueule" which means "gate throat" because of their throaty baying. This looks like a miniature foxhound but was mostly used to hunt hare. They have one of the best noses in the canine world and are employed often to scent contraband at international checkpoints, especially agriculture.

The Boston Terrier is known as the American Gentleman because of their tuxedo patterned coat. Originating around 1875, they are the first US breed to be recognized by the United Kennel Club. They are very smart, easily trained, and very popular as city pets because of their small size.

The word Papillon means "butterfly" in French, which you may understand when you see this dog's large winglike ears. Also known as the Continental Toy Spaniel, it is one of the oldest small dogs on record although the butterfly-eared variety didn't appear until the 16th century. Before then, the dog primarily had drop-ears, a version of the dog that still exists today and goes by the name Phalene... Moth!

The German Shorthaired Pointer is a distinctive-looking speckled gun dog with high intelligence and an overabundance of energy. Sometimes called "velcro dogs" they are extremely loyal and friendly with both people and other dogs. Just be mindful of their physical needs, these little guys are ready to go go go!

Afghan Hounds are known for their long gownlike silky coats, but all that hair hides a lithe and athletic body. They are a basal breed, which is a lineage so old it predates modern breeds. As sight hounds they were originally utilized for hunting small game although nowadays those skills are mostly applied to lure coursing. They are aloof and elegant dogs as at home on a rich velvet couch as they are on the move.

The Carolina Dog is one of the oldest breeds in the United States and is relatively untouched by human meddling. As a result it’s also one of the rarest breeds. Also known as the American Dingo, the Dixie Dingo, or simply the Yellow Dog, they were companions of native peoples before entering AKC history.

Border Collies are herding dogs used all over the British Isles. They are one of the most intelligent breeds, used for working and for sporting. They're highly trainable but also very athletic and will need lots of exercise to work off energy and avoid boredom.

The Australian Cattle Dog is true to its name. It's an Australian breed groomed specifically for herding cattle over long distances of the Australian Outback. They were bred from Northumberland herding dogs brought from Wales with tamed dingoes! So not only is it an Australian breed, it's at least partially a native animal.
