Test flight by US aviation pioneer Wilbur Wright (1867-1912) of the 1902 glider built and flown by the Wright brothers Orville and Wilbur on beaches near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA. Wilbur is making a right turn in this glide from Number 2 Hill. The Wrights carried out a series of glider tests from 1900 to 1902, prior to their first successful flight in a heaver-than-air machine (17 December 1903). This glider design included a rebuilt rudder. It had a length of 4.9 metres and a wingspan of 9.8 metres. Hundreds of glides took place in 1902, the longest of 190 metres took 26 seconds. The Outer Banks of North Carolina have a magic that entices all who travel through any one of her more than 400 year old towns. From Carova all the way down to Ocracoke island people have been drawn to the undisturbed beauty found on OBX.

The day commemorates the first successful flights in a mechanically propelled airplane that was heavier-than-air. The planes were made by Orville and Wilbur Wright, or ‘the Wright brothers’ in 1903 near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. A proclamation is made annually, inviting Americans to celebrate the day with various ceremonies and activities.
