A narrowboat moored next to a restaurant, once a watermill, on the banks of the Thames at Maidenhead in Berkshire. Just behind us the river passes through Boulters Lock, the subject of paintings especially in Victorian and Edwardian times. This is Ray Mill Island and in the background a new footbridge leads over the river to Taplow. A lovely place to stop for refreshment on your journey along this beautiful river.

A narrow boat moored next to the Severn-Avon lock at Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. This is a branch of the River Avon just above the point at which it joins the River Severn to eventually flow into the Bristol Channel. Once through the lock the Avon continues upstream to Shakespeare's Stratford. Tewkesbry is an ancient market town dominated by the Norman tower of the Abbey. Autumnal reflections in the waters of the Kennet and Avon Canal (Kennet Navigation) just above Midgham Lock in West Berkshire. Here a wide boat is moored next to the towpath. Follow the path and we reach Thatcham and Newbury before carrying on to Bath and Bristol. Behind us, below the lock, we reach Woolhampton and eventually Reading and the Thames.

Swansea Marina in Swansea on a sunny day in Wales

A digital painting from my original photograph of the scene above the lock at Aldermaston Wharf on the Kennet and Avon Canal (or Navigation) in Berkshire. A lovely tranquil scene - hard to imagine the industry here over 100 years ago! Then the whole area was busy with working canal canal boats loading and unloading their cargoes. Here too were the workshops and forges necessary for the running of the canal.

A dinghy moored on the Oxford Canal at Thrupp near Kidlington in Oxfordshire, England. The Oxford Canal, 77 miles long, was constructed in the late 1700s and was opened in stages between 1774 and 1790. The aim was to connect Coventry and its nearby coalfields with Oxford, the Thames and eventually London. It's a contour canal meaning it follows the line of the hills rather than using flights of locks to climb them, resulting in fewer locks overall. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200
