White matter fibres. Computer enhanced 3D diffusion spectral imaging (DSI) scan of the bundles of white matter nerve fibres in the brain. The fibres transmit nerve signals between brain regions and between the brain and the spinal cord. Diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI) is a variant of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in which a magnetic field maps the water contained in neuron fibers, thus mapping their criss-crossing patterns. A similar technique called diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is also used to explore neural data of white matter fibres in the brain. National Parkinson’s Day is observed on April 11 every year to raise awareness about this medical condition. Parkinson’s remains a somewhat unknown condition, and its severity is not known to most people. What is well known is that Parkinson’s is a disorder that afflicts the nervous system, it hampers movement and is often characterized by tremors. This day aims to increase awareness among people and get us all to get together and help those in need. Extensive research is also encouraged in order to get us closer to the cure of the condition.

The hippocampus is rich in pyramidal cells such as these, which have numerous dendrites (right) trailing from one end of their cell body (dark areas) and one axon projecting from the other (left). Dendrites form junctions communicating with other cells, and signals are then relayed through the cell's axon.

Neural progenitor cells are able to differentiate into neurons (nerve cells) or support cells (glial cells), which include astrocytes. Astrocytes have been stained orange and neural progenitor cells green. Cell nuclei are blue. Neural progenitor cells are a potential source of cells to replace damaged or lost brain cells.
