Place Vendôme is a square in Paris located to the north of the Tuileries Gardens. It was laid out in 1702 as a monument to the glory of the armies of Louis XIV. Its regular architecture and pedimented screens canted across the corners give the rectangular Place Vendôme the aspect of an octagon. The Place Vendôme has been renowned for its fashionable and deluxe hotels (such as the Ritz Hotel). Also, many famous dress designers have had their salons in the square. The only two remaining are the shirt-maker Charvet (at number 28 - this store has been there since 1877) and the couturier Chéruit (number 21). We were on the road in Cambodia from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap; driving all day at about 60 kph. It was slow with there being so many slow, amazingly overladen vehicles on the road. It was late in the afternoon, almost dusk, when we encountered this small truck carrying what I must assume are farm workers at the end their day. I've looked at this image many times, but each time that I do, I seem to count more heads. I think that there were 14 people travelling on the back, plus probably more in the cab. They appear to be sitting on top of what might have been harvested, but just what that might be I'm not sure. It really does look like the end of a hard day's work, which is what I feel makes this such a remarkably interesting image. I hope...
