Vampira was everywhere for about 15 minutes in the 1950s. Then she challenged the might of ABC television and was crushed under corporate foot. A statuesque, blond Teutonic goddess, Vampira (born Maila Nurmi) preferred to run with the weirdos, turning horror costuming into fashion and setting the stage for goth. Nurmi would have turned 100 years old on Dec. 11, 2022. Her birthday was marked with events around Los Angeles, including a gathering at Hollywood Forever and screenings of Plan 9 from Outer Space and Ed Wood at the American Cinematheque. This is the poster I created to promote the various birthday events.

The immortal Vampira from the equally immortal "Plan 9 From Outer Space" is here to lurk you like the undead vampiric maniac she is.

Plan 9 from Outer Space is still a better love story than Twilight. (Are we still making those jokes?)

Bride of the Monster is a 1955 American independent science fiction horror film, co-written, produced and directed by Edward D. Wood Jr., and starring Bela Lugosi and Tor Johnson with a supporting cast featuring Tony McCoy and Loretta King. The film is considered to have Wood's biggest budget ($70,000). Production commenced in 1954 but, due to further financial problems, was not completed until 1955. It was released in May 1955, initially on a double bill with Macumba.

Vampira might have been the Queen of Horrors as one of the original horror hosts and star of Ed Wood's Plan 9, but even she had to protect herself during goth girl summer.

Tor Johnson, was a Swedish professional wrestler and actor. As an actor, Johnson appeared in many B-movies, including some famously directed by low budget icon Ed Wood. In professional wrestling, Johnson was billed as Thor Johnson and Super Swedish Angel.
