The raven is one of the most common birds in ancient mythologies. Most likely because of its shiny, black color, it’s peculiar sound, being a scavenger and it’s intelligence. It has long been considered a bird of ill omen and has often obtained mythic status as a mediator animal between life and death. As a carrion bird, ravens became associated with the dead. For example in Sweden, they where known as the ghosts of murdered persons and lost souls. In many cultures, such as Aboriginal and Native American legends, the raven is believed to have originally been white. This work was created from a photograph, using Adobe Lightroom and a mix of effects using Photoshop CC

The raven have been an important symbol in pagan mythology in many parts of the world. In Norse mythology the two ravens, Hugin and Munin, where believed to part of Odin, the God of knowledge, war and death. Hugin and Munin would fly around the world and gather information and knowledge and they would also help the Valkyries to decide which fallen warriors that would be chosen to enter Valhalla. This was believed to be the reason why soldiers would see gatherings of ravens above battlefields.
