I have always been struck by the image of emblem of Essex, where I was born and bred. Most outsiders snigger and deride the place, once you get to know the place and its secret backwaters it is steeped in history and wonder. If you are keen on cricket and or know an Essex supporter this image may make an ideal gift. The swords are known as saxes which and the Saxons were named after, and Essex of course derives from "east Saxons"

The hampshire flag features a saxon crown and a Tudor Rose. The crown is a reference to Alfred the Great who had his capital in Winchester. The rose is a reference to the double rose on the King Arthur's table.

Much Wenlock, with a population of around 3,000 people, is a medieval town and parish in Shropshire, England. Priory: An Anglo-Saxon monastery was founded here in about 680 by King Merewalh of Mercia, whose abbess daughter Milburge was hailed as a saint. Her relics, were miraculously re-discovered here in 1101, attracting both pilgrims and prosperity to the priory.

On the train from Romsey to Salisbury I've passed this saxon church at Lockerley (Hampshire, UK) many times. Last December I cycled out, and found a footpath near the railway from which I took a photo of the church and from which I drew / painted this sketch. It done in water soluble coloured pencil - so not sure if that counts as a drawing or a painting. Anyhow, having never used this media before I used a technique of first drawing as I would with ordinary coloured pencils, and then dabbed a damp or wet brush to get varying levels of smudginess whilst retaining some of the pencil marks.
