Proud Snowy Egret by Debra Martz There were a few dozen Snowies on this peninsula below the spillway. They are known for their attitude and territorial ways but this one was the winner hands down! It was either running or flying at each of the others in an attempt to make them leave this fishing spot. He was fairly successful at chasing off the majority. It had just attacked the one in the background which was walking away. Location: Great Salt Plains State Park in northern Oklahoma. Snowy Egret Performance by Debra Martz It might look like a performance but it's their attitude about territory that gets them up in the air and running sideways like this. Incoming one wanting to take over the fishing spot where the other was being successful. If there are several in close proximity, you will most likely get a show like this! Captured below the spillway at the Great Salt Plains State Park in northern Oklahome. The Snowy Attitude by Debra Martz A day trip to the Great Salt Plains State Park provided ample opportunities to photograph the Snowy Egrets. After a walk down the side of the multi-tiered spillway, I found additional concrete stairs leading down to the peninsula at the very bottom where there were many of these birds fishing; they were also squabbling at times over what I assumed was the best fishing spot! This one really had some territorial attitude! This lake is near Jet in northern Oklahoma. It is present all year round in South America, ranging as far south as Chile and Argentina. The birds eat fish, crustaceans, insects, small reptiles, snails, frogs, worms and crayfish. Fossils of the snowy egret have been reported from Peru and in Bradenton in Manatee County and in Alachua County in Florida, United States. The deposits were dated to the Late Pleistocene.
