The saying "Memento Mori" is Latin and reminds us of the mortality of man.

Engraved or sculpted brass tombs were popular in Medieval and Tudor England, usually depicting the tomb's owner in all their finery, as if asleep. Susannah Gartside died in 1668, two years after the Restoration of the monarchy - the artwork on her tomb is definitely Medieval in nature, although more competently executed. It was popular in the 19th century to make rubbings of these memorials as display them as art.

The first sight visitors see upon emerging from the 1.5 kilometer-long Siq is the Treasury (Arabic: al-Khazneh), the most magnificent of Petra's sights. This curly lychen on a Victorian tombstone reminded me of waves in Japanese woodblock art. I found the same patterns on all the old tombstones in a little Somerset cemetery.

Necropolis de Camaguey

Declared National Monument in 1987, this is the most important cemetery in Cuba making it the largest in America. According to Enrique Martínez y Martínez, in the Cuba Arquitectura y Urbanismo magazine, Cementerio de Colón “was the most notable religious construction built in the city in the 19th century.” Given the richness of its architecture and sculptures, it is also regarded as one of the most valuable religious constructions in the world, from a cultural viewpoint.
