The 2nd BN of the 4th Artillery was a towed 105MM Howitzer battalion supporting the 9th Infantry Division. Supporting the 2nd Brigade. Later the 2/4 was assigned to support 3rd Brigade under the 25th Infantry Division

The 87th Infantry Regiment is an infantry regiment in the United States Army. The regiment's 1st and 2nd Battalions are light infantry units assigned to the 1st and 2nd Brigade Combat Teams respectively of the 10th Mountain Division located at Fort Drum, New York. The 3d Battalion was active in the U.S. Army Reserve in Colorado. The 4th Battalion was a Regular Army unit assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 25th Infantry Division (Light) at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

United State Cavalry units, including Buffalo Soldiers — black soldiers of the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 24th and 25th Infantry — and the Cheyenne and Arapaho American Indian scouts, along with the U.S. Marshal Service, maintained the peace on the central plains until the turn of the century."
