Inspired by Utamaro Kitagawa’s work, here are the Women of his era. Utamaro Kitagawa (1753-1806) was a Japanese artist known for his woodblock prints of women, known as “bijinga”. He is considered one of the greatest artists of the ukiyo-e genre, which flourished during the Edo period in Japan. Utamaro’s prints were known for their sensitivity and elegance, as well as their technical skill. He was particularly famous for his portrayals of women, and many of his prints depicted the daily lives of courtesans, geisha, and other women of the pleasure quarters. He also created many portraits of famous actors and other celebrities of his day. Utamaro’s work was highly influential, and his style was widely imitated by other artists.
