Exeter Canal The Exeter Ship Canal (Exeter, Devon, England), first completed in the 1560s, is one of the oldest man-made waterways in Britain. It was constructed to bypass weirs that had been built across the River Exe to prevent boats reaching the city, instead forcing them to unload at Topsham, from where the Earls of Devon would charge high tolls for transporting goods into the city. The canal was last used commercially in 1972, but it is still widely used for leisure purposes, and the city basin is being included as part of a £24 million redevelopment scheme.
