This quote comes from Plutarch's Life of Brutus (22.3). In it, Brutus is discussing with Cicero the upcoming Roman civil war as the Second Triumvirate and the Liberators fought to gain control of Rome after Julius Caesar's death. Brutus here is referring to his distant ancestor, Lucius Brutus, who chased the last tyrant king from Rome (Tarqiun) and established the Roman Republic, the first democratic government since the fall of Athens. The death of Caesar and the banishment of Tarqiun were pivotal moments in ancient Roman history.

The Athenian silver tetradrachm was one of the most instantly recognizable coins in the ancient Mediterranean world. The olive and owl are symbolic of Athena, the patron goddess of the city-state of Athens. The crescent moon we think was added at a later date to commemorate the Battle of Salamis.

Artifacts of weirdness, mystery and wonder

This comes from a print in E. A. Wallis Budge's book "The Gods of the Egyptians : or, Studies in Egyptian Mythology" (1904). It shows the deities Isis and Osiris from a papyrus scroll. To oversimplify extremely complex nuances of Egyptian mythology, Osiris is primarily the god of rebirth, resurrection, and the afterlife. Isis is one of the most powerful deities associated with motherhood, magic, and protection

The Sutton Hoo helmet is an ornately decorated Anglo-Saxon helmet found during a 1939 excavation of the Sutton Hoo ship-burial. It was buried around 625 and is widely associated with King Rædwald of East Anglia; its elaborate decoration may have given it a secondary function akin to a crown. The helmet was both a functional piece of armour that would have offered considerable protection if ever used in warfare, and a decorative, prestigious piece of extravagant metalwork. It is described as "the most iconic object" from "one of the most spectacular archaeological discoveries ever made", and perhaps the most important known Anglo-Saxon artefact. This block print design is based on the famous paleolithic cave art from the Lascaux Caves. The animal depicted here is an aurochs, a type of now extinct wild cattle. To create this I first hand-carved, then printed, my own block carving of this design then scanned the print.
