And another image of the Great Wall at Badaling. I hope this one clearly shows one of the most insane ascents (descents, depending on which direction you come from) and extremely steep set of steps on the this section of the wall. As I had mentioned before, some of these steps were close to two feet tall!!! Just crazy. Extremely testing if you are not particularly fit. In the very short time that I had visiting that day, I only managed to cover about 4 kilometers of this insanity! Hope this image doesn't scare from visiting Badaling! The Great Wall of China was built as an ancient Chinese defence project in order to protect China from its enemies. This section of the wall at Badaling was built to protect Beijing City on the north side. Badaling is the site of the most visited section of the Great Wall. It is situated approximately 50 miles (80 km) northwest of the city of Beijing in Yanqing County. This portion of the wall was built back in 1504 during the Ming Dynasty, along with a military outpost reflecting the location's strategic importance. The highest point of Badaling is approximately 1,015 metres (3,330 ft) above sea level. This is another image showing the Great Wall at Badaling. The day I visited the wall the weather was so crappy it wasn't even funny. A combination of heavy fog, rain on and off, low clouds, and visibility at certain times was no more than 50 meters ahead. Almost 90 percent of the pictures that I took were totally unusable. The only barely useable ones were the ones with close-ups (hence not much of a background showing the expansive mountains or trees, etc.). Oh well. My friends asked me why did I go back to Beihai Park during a 2-day stay in Beijing, a park that I have spent almost 8 hours at during a previous trip, when I could have gone to other just as impressive, if not even more impressive places. The answer is – I always wanted to get this shot right!!! And I think I got it this time. Beihai Park has a fairly large garden area that is dedicated to bamboo trees. An image of the entire garden would look just “blah” and would not show the intricate carvings on each tree stem in the garden; hence this photo (and the previous one by the same title). I can’t tell you what these carvings read, and I don’t how long it would take to carve these Chinese characters, but they sure look artistically beau...

This is an image of a fairly large jade piece of a Siberian tiger almost springing into action. If I would take a good guess, this piece stands at about 4 ft high, 8 ft long and 3 ft wide. It was very difficult to fit the entire piece in the frame, so I chose to focus on the face and not show the rest of it due to its shear size and the many distracting elements surrounding it. Many life-size pieces of warriors stood in the main gallery of this jade factory. This is an image of one of the warrior's faces. The entire piece stood at about 7 ft long, 2-3 ft wide and 2-3 ft deep. I chose not to show the rest of this carving (or any of the other full size pieces ) as the brilliant neon lights all around were just over powering for this type of photography (especially with no shades or umbrellas at hand).
