Guarding the Light ©Debra Martz I couldn't believe this Brown Pelican was perched up high on this street light. I was in the area about 4 years ago and saw one perched in the exact same place and thought it was strange at the time as I had never seen a pelican perch on something like this. I guess it did offer a good vantage point as it was right by the boat ramp at Goose Island State Park in Texas. It was not bothered by my presence as it stayed put while I walked around taking photos...guess it didn't want another pelican or bird to get its light. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved

Little penguins are the smallest of all penguin species, standing at approximately 33cm tall. Little penguins breed in colonies along the southern coastlines of Australia and New Zealand. While the thousands of penguins on Phillip Island near Melbourne are a tourist attraction, there is a much smaller population here in Sydney. In the past there were hundreds of little penguins in Sydney’s North Harbour. However, by the 1990s numbers were thought to be as low as 35 breeding pairs. Due to a concentrated effort by National Parks and Wildlife Service, Office of Environment and Heritage, Manly Council, Manly Environment Centre, Taronga Zoo and the local community, there are now around 60–70 breeding pairs. Colorful Brown Pelican by Debra Martz The great thing about North Padre Island, Corpus Christi, Texas, is that beach driving is still allowed. So somedays I spend just driving and stopping along the beach to watch the coastal shore birds. Graceful Flight of a Herring Gull by Debra Martz While the activity of birds was heavy on the water, I took to watching this young Herring Gull making lazy and graceful circles in the sky each time coming just a bit closer to me. In a few more years it will be a white gull with a yellow beak sporting a red dot. Rainbow Lorikeets are commonly found in the rainforests, coastal bushes and woodland forest areas of Australia’s east coast. They are notorious for destroying fruit crops. These birds eat a wide range of fruits, seeds, nectar and pollen from flowers. Wild lorikeets are common in urban areas and often get close to humans. Photo taken in Sydney on a Nikon Coolpix P610.
