The electoral race was close and ended controversially with Gore not receiving a recount of the votes in Florida as Bush won the election in the electoral college, despite Gore winning the popular vote. The 2000 election is remembered not only for its controversial finish but also for its deepening of partisan politics in the United States in the early 21st century.
