The Rua Augusta Arch is a stone triumphal arch-like historical building and visitor attraction in Lisbon. It is situated at the entrance to the Praça do Comércio (a commercial plaza). It was built to commemorate the city's reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake. The arch features six columns (some 11 m high) and is adorned with statues of various historical figures, and the top part is filled with the coat of arms of Portugal. The allegorical group at the top of the arch represents Glory rewarding Valor and Genius. The arch was originally designed as a bell tower, but then it was transformed into an elaborate arch after more than a century. As described in my previous images in this series, this is a stone, triumphal arch-like building built to commemorate Lisbon's reconstruction after the devastating 1755 earthquake, tsunami and fire that destroyed most of the city of Lisbon. The allegorical group at the top represents Glory crowning Valor and Genius. Because of the top cornice's great height, the figures above it had to be made colossal. The female allegory of Glory stands on a three-step throne and holds two crowns. Valor is personified by an amazon, partially covered with chlamys and wearing a high-crested helmet with dragon patterns (the symbols of the House of Braganza); her left hand holds a parazonium with a trophy of flags behind. This is a close-up image of the statue of King Louis XIV on a horseback; the statue is situated in the front courtyard of the Louvre museum. The Equestrian Statue of King Louis XIV is a sculpture designed and partially executed by the Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Bernini first discussed the project while in France in the mid-1660s, but it did not start until later in the decade, when back in Rome. It was not completed until 1684, and then shipped to Paris in 1685. Louis XIV of France was extremely unhappy with the end result and had it placed in a corner of the gardens of the royal palace at Versailles. I've always found the mechanics of objects really interesting. This bridge had a very beautiful naked structure which reminded me of a skeleton, a bit creepy but incredibly functional!

Tyntesfield is a Victorian Gothic Revival house in North Somerset, England named after the Tynte baronets, who had owned estates in the area since about 1500. The location was formerly that of a 16th-century hunting lodge, which was used as a farmhouse until the early 19th century. In the 1830s a Georgian mansion was built on the site, which was bought by English businessman William Gibbs, whose huge fortune came from guano used as fertilizer. In the 1860s Gibbs had the house significantly expanded and remodelled; a chapel was added in the 1870s. The Gibbs family owned the house until the death of Richard Gibbs in 2001. (Wikipedia)
