Watermelons were originally a symbol of black emancipation pre Jim Crow era and were then co-opted by racists to become a racist trope about their supposed uncleanliness, childishness, idleness and unfitness for the public square. It was spread in US print throughout the late 1860s and supported the post-emancipation argument that African Americans were unsuited for citizenship. Well, FUCK that.

I made this work, titled 'The Rot Beneath the Gown,' as a representation of the costs involved in consumerism, fashion and consumption - the human costs, slave labour, historical exploitation, imperialism and death that persists to this day to feed the colonial need for hoarding resources, beauty and clothing to express class.

Part of a series in remixing classic art to protest art – feat. Keffiyeh and resistance. DYK, it first served a practical purpose for men who wore it as a head cloth, protecting them from harsh climate conditions like excessive sun exposure & dust storms and also indicated a person’s social status.

An early work but no less beloved, about what it feels like trying to carve out equal rights while others work hard to claw each gain back and tell us it's too soon, just wait, do it peacefully, don't make a fuss, play in respectability politics. All bullshit, set to Nina Simone's classic protest song, Mississippi Goddamn.

This is a work I made about what toxic positivity feels like when you're in recovery. Always being told "let it go", "you have to forgive to move on", "you're holding on to the past" and other endless blaming statements under the guise of 'positivity.' Baby, you cry, rage, wail, destroy until you get the toxic sludge, grief, sorrow and rage out of your body. You become the nightmare that haunts you if it helps you heal. It's not your burden to carry, you do what you have to to put it down.

A rumination about the classic 3/5s rules & one drop rule in the US.. and its absurdity. After all, if one drop makes you indigenous and or black or any other non white ethnic drop while simultaneously, having unexpected obscene wealth can make you legally white when you're black... it really shows how all of these rules for subjugation are utterly stupid, infantile and require mass violence to enforce.

A work made for a historical museum exhibit, dealing with decolonization and re-centering hidden ugly narratives. This is about the 10 million Congolese who were mutilated and murdered to mine diamonds and rubber for the Belgian monarchy and were mutilated or their children were if quotas weren't met.

I was inspired to make this when reading about the Louvre and the Salon, and how things were chosen to be included as the classic arts... and that it was less about talent of the day necessarily and more about wealthy subject matter via patronage and accepted subject matter by the Church and establishment... and that Van Gogh and other similar artistic styles were not originally included or chosen because they didn't match the accepted milieu. So this feels like a littel crime against the status quo, which is what good art, I think, is.
