The snow-encrusted view from the ski lift going up to the bunny slope at Niseko Grand Hirafu ski resort. I got very used to this view since I spent most of my 5 days on this slope!

This sign, seen in Karesuando at 68º north in Swedish Lapland, was one of the more impressive markers I've seen. Despite the cold, I found myself standing there for quite a while, picking out all the places I've been and all the places I would like to go. The numbers were mind-boggling too -- from a bit over 100km to Kiruna, my previous stop, to over 6600 to Sapporo, where I rang in the New Year, all of the distances seemed to be quite a long way! The amazing Blue Marine room in the 2012/2013 Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, Swedish Lapland. Stepping into this room, carved by Andrew Winch & William Blomstrand, felt like stepping into the belly of a whale.

I couldn't believe how many gorgeous sunsets I saw in Lapland. The sun seemed to be in golden hour for most of the day and became even more striking around sunset. What a great way to start an evening of northern lights watching! This shot was taken just outside the glass igloo village at Santa's Resort, Kakslauttanen.
