When the weather is cold, birds fluff their feathers in order to stay warm. Cedar Waxwings Migrating North by Debra Martz We were at Paradise Pond in Port Aransas, Tx and I was tracking a Magnolia Warbler with my lens when my husband Doug called out, "Look up!" And of course, I did!! This is just a portion of the very large flock of Waxwings that flew over us. Happy to have seen this but sure would have been nice if they would have decided to circle around and land in a tree nearby. Obviously to early in the day to stop on their northbound migration on this day, May 14th. Cedar Waxwings are a shiny collection of brown, gray, and lemon-yellow, accented with a subdued crest, black mask, and brilliant-red wax droplets on the wing feathers. Heron With Another Stick @Debra Martz In Rockport, Texas there is a large stand of Live Oak trees that serves as a rookery each year during the breeding season. It is across the street from the bay which is a source of food for the Herons making this an attractive place to nest. Tricolored Heron Angel Wings - Photopainting by Debra Martz This photopainting was create from my original photograph. I captured this heron from the Leonabelle boardwalk in Port Aransas, Texas. When they spread their wings it reminds me of beautiful angel wings. Tricolored Heron are beautiful with colors of blue-gray, lavender, white and yellowish legs. They are easily identifiable because unlike other dark herons, they have a white belly and white stripe down the middle (front) of its long neck. It is mainly a woodpecker of Mexico and Central America but it reaches the United States only in the brushlands and open woodlands of Texas and Oklahoma.

Peregrine falcon in a rescue

One of my most fascinating encounters to date: a small co-ed flock of Hooded Mergansers put in a two-hour "cameo" appearance (and extended courtship displays) at Centennial Beach in early February 2015. For more than half an hour, I was totally entranced by the courtship displays of the four males as they attempted to entice the two females into noticing them with head raises, bobs, and frog-like croaking.
