Sirius binary star system, Hubble Space Telescope image. Sirius A (centre, Alpha Canis Majoris), in the constellation Canis Major, is the brightest star in the night sky and only 8.6 light years from Earth. It has a very small, faint companion, Sirius B (small dot at lower left). Sirius B, only 12,000 kilometres in diameter, is a white dwarf star, the collapsed core of a star. Normally, the companion star would be obscured by the brightness of its companion, but Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 instrument was used to locate the star, and other instruments were then used to measure the gravitational redshift of its light, and hence its mass. Sirius B has a mass 98% of that of our Sun. The results were published in December 2005.

Moon phases. Time-lapse image of the phases of the Moon, as seen from Earth during a lunar (synodic) month. A full Moon is at centre, with pairs of (from inner to outer) gibbous Moons, quarter Moons and crescent Moons. The lunar phases occur because the Moon does not produce its own light, but reflects that of the Sun. As it travels around the Earth during its 29.53-day orbit, parts of the Moon's surface which are visible from Earth become shadowed by the Moon itself. Crescent Moons occur when the Moon lies almost between the Earth and Sun, and full moons occur when the Moon is furthest from the Sun.

Formation of the Moon. Computer artwork showing the giant impact theory of the formation of the Moon. This theory says that an object about the size of Mars (top right) collided with the Earth (centre) around 4.6 billion years ago, soon after they both formed. The impact was side-on, rather than a direct impact. Material from the outer layers of both bodies was thrown into orbit around the Earth, forming a ring. This then coalesced to form the Moon.
