Lilac Breasted Roller, Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, East Africa. They are monogamous and nest in an unlined hole in a tree or in masonry, and lay 2–4 eggs in the tropics, 3–6 at higher latitudes. The Lilac Breasted Roller is the national bird of Botswana. Elephants must have access to water and enjoy spending time washing, playing and cooling off. African Elephants are classified as endangered. Grey Crowned Crane, Balearica regulorum, Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, East Africa. Juvenile. The adult Grey Crowned Crane is about 1 m, 3.3 ft tall and weighs 3.5 kg, 7.7 lbs. Its body plumage is mainly grey. These birds are the emblem of Uganda and appear on the country's flag. Canon 500D, Canon 100-400 mm lens. (Featured in Close-ups in Nature.)

Pair of Little Bee-eaters, Merops pusillus, Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, East Africa. It reaches a length of 15-17 cm, which makes it the smallest African bee-eater. Sexes are alike. There have been estimated to be between 60-80 million Little Bee-eaters. It breeds in open country with bushes, preferably near water. Only a few minutes into Serengeti National Park and we encountered this adult cheetah soaking up the sun on a rock just metres from the road.

The Serengeti (SERR-ən-GHET-ee) ecosystem is a geographical region in Africa, spanning northern Tanzania. The protected area within the region includes approximately 30,000 km2 (12,000 sq mi) of land, including the Serengeti National Park and several game reserves.

Granite outcrops called Kopjes which are typical of a large part of the southern Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, East Africa.
