Thames Tank Tops

The sun setting over the River Thames just upstream from Marlow in Buckinghamshire, looking towards Bisham on the Berkshire side. This stretch of river is frequently busy with rowing, kayaking and canoeing crews training as both Marlow Rowing Club and the National Sports Centre at Bisham Abbey are close by. Looking over the River Thames at Henley in Oxfordshire. Rising above the riverside buildings is the C16th tower of the parish church of St Mary the Virgin. Further upriver cab be seen Henley Bridge constructed in 1786. Henley is probably most famous for the annual Royal Regatta - the 'Royal' status being given when Prince Albert became patron in 1851.

The shadows are lengthening as the sun begins to set over the Thames Valley on an autumn afternoon. This is the scene looking over the fields just below Woodcote in Oxfordshire towards South Stoke and the Thames. On the opposite side of the valley in the far distance are the distinctive shapes of the Sinodun Hills - or Wittenham Clumps as they are usually called.

The River Thames as it flows through the market town of Abingdon in Oxfordshire. In the background is the spire of St Helen's church which dates form the early 12th century, In 2005 it acquired a new ring of 10 bells cast by the famous Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London. Although now in Oxfordshire, Abingdon was, until 1867, the county town of Berkshire before that status was transferred to Reading. In Medieval times it was an important wool and woollen cloth producing town.

The scene from the toll bridge at Whitchurch on Thames in Oxfordshire. The church of St Mary stands above the cottages which surround the old mill - no longer working but converted into flats. However, two large water wheels can be seen beneath the building, The church, originally built in Norman times underwent an extensive rebuilding programme during the Victorian period. Whitchurch is across the Thames and just north of the village of Pangbourne in Berkshire.

A digital sketch of sailing dinghies near Goring-on-Thames just above Cleeve Lock. This is where the River Thames makes its way between the North Wessex or Berkshire Downs and the Chiltern Hills - this stretch being known as the Goring Gap. A variety of boats are found here - launches, racing boats, canoes, kayaks - and sailing boats. Seen on a bright summer day on a walk along the Thames Path National Trail which stretches from Cricklade in the Cotswolds to the Thames Barrier.

Seen here from the Thames Promenade at Reading, club boathouses along The Warren at Caversham. This stretch of the Thames is always busy with boats of all sorts, including racing boats, canoes and kayaks attached to the clubs.

People enjoy boating on Henley on Thames

The road bridge at Henley on Thames which carries the A4130 from Henley in Oxfordshire over the river to Remenham in Berkshire. Built to replace an earlier wooden structure, this bridge was designed by the architect William Hayward in 1781 and was completed in 1784, the builder being John Townesend of Oxford. On the left here is the landing stage of the Leander Rowing Club reminding us that Henley is most famous for the Royal Regatta held every July (in normal times!). The bridge is a Grade 1 listed structure.

A digital painting from my original photograph of the lock at Benson in Oxfordshire. This can be reached via the Thames Path from Wallingford and, after crossing the adjacent weir, the walk can be continued to a very welcome riverside cafe and restaurant. The lock as we see it dates from 1870 but the first one was built in 1788 by the Thames Navigation Commission. Here a boat is passing through on its way upstream to Shillingford and then on to Abingdon and Oxford.

This is as far you can take a river boat on the Thames. The scene is just above Lechlade and the boats moored in the distance cannot go further upstream for here it narrows and becomes shallower as it heads towards Cricklade. Just behind us is the roundhouse which marks the beginning of the now derelict Thames and Severn Canal which once allowed working narrow boats to travel further. In the distance is the spire of St Lawrence's church at Lechlade - a picturesque market town.

The river scene at Goring on Thames as viewed from the road bridge. This is one of the most picturesque places along the length of the river at the point where it flows between the Chiltern Hills and the North Wessex Downs known as the Goring Gap. A lock has been here since the 1500s when a local miller needed a head of water. The present lock was first constructed in 1787 and was rebuilt in 1921.

Caversham Bridge which spans the River Thames joining Reading town and Caversham. The first bridge here was built c1163. During the Civil War a skirmish on the bridge resulted in the Reading side being rebuilt with a wooden drawbridge added. This was later painted on canvas by JMW Turner. The present stone and concrete bridge dates from 1926. To create this image my original photograph has been given an oil pastel finish.

Here the river flows through the Goring Gap between the Chiltern Hills in the north and the Berkshire or North Wessex Downs in the south. Being so picturesque, Goring is a favourite location for photographers and painters - including JM Turner!

A view downriver at Marlow on Thames in Buckinghamshire captured on an autumn afternoon. The suspension bridge spanning the river was constructed in 1832 and was designed by William Tierney Clark' It was the prototype for the Szechenyi Bridge in Budapest and bears a plaque linking it with that city. The scene just above the old mill in Goring-on-Thames. Here the river divides, the main stream passing through the lock (just behind us) and rushing over the weir whilst this branch once turned the millwheel. Boats are frequently moored here and opposite are some recently refurbished boathouses and a row of black and white buildings which houses the dentist's surgery! An Autumn scene on the Thames at Sandford Lock just south of Oxford. Taken late in the day during early November, the low sun intensifies the autumnal colours. Sandford lock is the deepest on the Thames and is also one of the oldest.
