Sheldon Peck (August 26, 1797 - March 19, 1869) was an American folk artist, abolitionist, and social activist as well as an advocate for temperance, women’s rights, racial equality, public education, and pacifism. Peck’s portraiture – with its distinctive style — is a prime example of 19th century American folk art. While working as an artist, Peck was a conductor on the Underground Railroad.

He became the most important leader of the movement for African-American civil rights in the 19th century.

Osborne Perry Anderson was one of the five African American men to accompany John Brown in the raid on the Federal Arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia) in October 1859. Anderson was a free-born black abolitionist, born in West Fallow Field, Pennsylvania on July 27, 1830. Along with John Anthony Copeland Jr., another member of the Brown raiding party, Anderson attended Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. Christiana Carteaux Bannister (1819–1902) was a business entrepreneur, hairdresser, and abolitionist in New England. She was known professionally as Madame Carteaux. Christiana Carteaux Bannister was born Christiana Babcock in 1819 in North Kingston, Rhode Island. She was born to African American and Narragansett Indian parents. She was a descendant of enslaved Africans who worked the plantations of South County, Rhode Island, during the eighteenth century. As a young woman, she moved to Boston where she worked as a wigmaker and hairdresser. In Boston, the Bannisters lived and worked with Lewis Hayden and participated in the Boston Underground Railroad. James Mott (20 June 1788 – 26 January 1868) was a Quaker leader, teacher, and merchant as well as an anti-slavery activist. He was born in Cowneck in North Hempstead on Long Island, to a Quaker family. James taught for two years at the Nine Partners Boarding School in Millbrook, New York where his father was the superintendent. At Nine Partners, he also met his future wife Lucretia Coffin, a student and later a teacher's aide. He married Lucretia Coffin Mott on 10 April 1811 in Philadelphia. Henry Highland Garnet (December 23, 1815 – February 13, 1882) was an African-American abolitionist, minister, educator and orator. Having escaped with his family as a child from slavery in Maryland, he grew up in New York City. He was educated at the African Free School and other institutions, and became an advocate of militant abolitionism. He became a minister and based his drive for abolitionism in religion. Garnet was a prominent member of the movement that led beyond moral suasion toward more political action. Lucretia Coffin Mott (January 3, 1793 – November 11, 1880) was an American Quaker, abolitionist, a women's rights activist, and a social reformer. She helped write the Declaration of Sentiments during the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention. Lucretia Coffin was born in Nantucket, Massachusetts, the second child of eight by Anna Folger and Thomas Coffin. Through her mother she was a descendent of Peter Foulger and Mary Morrill. Theodore Dwight Weld (November 23, 1803 in Hampton, Connecticut – February 3, 1895 in Hyde Park, Massachusetts) was one of the architects of the American abolitionist movement during its formative years from 1830 through 1844, playing a role as writer, editor, speaker, and organizer. He is best known for his co-authorship of the authoritative compendium American Slavery As It Is: Testimony of a Thousand Witnesses, published in 1839. Harriet Beecher Stowe partly based Uncle Tom’s Cabin on Weld's text, and it is regarded as second only to that work in its influence on the antislavery movement. Weld remained dedicated to the abolitionist movement until slavery was ended by the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1865.
