An alley in the Albaicin, Granada. I have always been inspired to paint the old quarters of Granada, the Albaicin, Sacromonte and the Alhambra. Spring and Autumn are the best times to visit the city but, because of Covid and lockdowns we have been unable to go to Granada for two years until this month. This painting of one of the narrow, cobbled streets of the Albaicin looking across to the Alhambra is the first in a new series of watercolours I hope to paint of this beautiful city. Moroccan Moderne has a lavish, almost psychedelic feel, and is based on medieval Moorish and Syrian designs.

The Patio de la Acequia is a water garden courtyard in the Palacio de Generalife, Granada, Spain. This was the summer palace and country estate of the Nasrid Emirs of Granada during the Moorish occupation. The Palace and gardens were built at the beginning of the 14th Century. Situated above the Alhambra Palace and fortifications the former rulers came to these gardens to relax. They are now a UNESCO world heritage site. The gardens with their ponds, fountains, flowerbeds and the beautiful buildings make a wonderful subject for watercolor painting. Granada is the new Miami

This is the final painting from my last visit to Granada at the end of November. This street, Cuesta Chapiz, runs down to the Rio Darro from the top of the old city. It divides the historic quarters, the Albaicin on the right from Sacromonte on the left and looks across to the Alhambra on the opposite hill. The third of my small watercolours of Granada. Calle Victoria is one of my favourite streets to paint in the Albaicin. The lovely old buildings in the foreground combine with the Alhambra in the background provide a perfect composition. Water is an ever present feature of the beautiful gardens of the Generalife, the summer palace of the Moorish sultans of Granada. Ponds and fountains are everywhere. The water spraying on hot stones tends to cool the air in summer. This is the second of my Autumn in Granada paintings of this year.

This is painted from a tiny square, Placeta Nevot, in the old Moorish quarter of Granada, the Albaicin. The old buildings here make wonderful subjects and where narrow, cobbled streets meet in this little placeta there is an excellent view looking across to the Alhambra on the opposite hill. Last week I visited Granada as it would be the last opportunity to paint scenes from the City until September. It is too hot to visit Granada in July and August but also the white, hazy light of high summer is not ideal for painting. In June though the light can be clear and intense and the colours in the city very rich, particularly the greens of the city’s trees. I looked for different compositions from the usual views so I strolled up the Sacromonte hill, the old gypsy quarter adjacent to the Albaicin, and found this perfect composition of Calle Enmedio Alta with the towers of the Alhambra behind. The old, Moorish quarter of Granada, the Albaicin, needs to be explored on foot. Even the widest of the cobbled streets can only cope with one way traffic. The lovely, old buildings are fascinating but often you will also get a view of the Alhambra on the hill opposite in the background. By walking up and down the steep lanes though you will come across some wonderful street scenes to paint and draw but the narrowness of the alleys makes it difficult to compose a painting. Looking out from a window in the Alhambra Palace, in Granada, Spain to the tower of the church of Santa Maria de la Alhambra. We can see the Moorish architecture of the window with its patterned stonework contrasting with the later Christian church design. Both a citadel and a palace, the Alhambra was founded by Spain's Islamic rulers in 1238 and shows magnificent examples of medieval Moorish architecture. The image has a textured finish.

Another of my small watercolours of Granada. Many narrow lanes lead down from the Albaicin to the cobbled street that runs alongside the Rio Darro below the Alhambra. Several ancient, pedestrian bridges cross over the river from here to the old buildings opposite. The buildings, colours and composition combine to make a lovely subject for a watercolour painting.
