Often within the Brunei bay ~ algal production goes up... There are many different biotic and abiotic factors which may cause an increased flux of phytoplankton in the waters. Physical components which often contribute are 'runoff from the land' which causes "eutrophication". One of the simplest, yet most effective solutions besides tackling at point source is to keep the ecosystem in balance by implementing a strict fisheries management protocol. Abundant populations of both algal and coral grazers are needed to be able to transport coral sand and reduce algal smothering of the reef in times of high nutrient load and strong sunlight. It could be 'total carnage' for the reefs of Borneo if pelagic fish populations run amuck...!...
